To be honest, I don’t know exactly when I became obsessed with flowers, but it probably happened sometime in childhood, when my grandmother showed me her garden. Now, studying philology and writing for various publications, I find myself researching these wonders of nature once again.

What struck me most during the research for this article? The fact that flowers are literally universal. In every culture you study, you find flowers—in poetry, in rituals, in the expression of feelings. They are like a language everyone understands, regardless of linguistic barriers.

Why have flowers captured our hearts?

How to choose the right flowers?

Think about it for a moment. When you want to tell someone you love them, what do you do? You buy them flowers. When you want to apologize? Flowers. When you celebrate something important? Flowers again. It’s fascinating how these fragile creations of nature have become the perfect vehicle for our deepest emotions.

Top 9 flowers that make us smile

Roses - the timeless classic

Let’s be realistic—roses are like jeans in the world of flowers. Always fashionable, always appropriate. I’ve noticed that men most often come looking for red roses (the obvious choice for Valentine’s Day), while women are much more adventurous—they ask me for white roses for friends who are getting married, yellow ones for making up with friends, and even purple ones simply because “they’re beautiful.”

Roses - the timeless classic

Interestingly, in the Middle Ages, roses were so highly valued that they were used as currency. It’s no wonder we still consider them the “gold” of flowers today.

Tulips - spring’s refresh

Bouquet of 25 Premium Pink Tulips - Sector 2 Bucharest Florist

Oh, tulips! If roses are about passion, tulips are about hope. I see them most often in March and April, when people are longing for spring. Do you know the story of “tulip mania” in the Netherlands? In 1637, a single tulip bulb cost as much as a house. Complete madness, but I understand the fascination—they’re like colorful glasses holding the sunshine inside.

Lilies - elegance personified

There’s something aristocratic about lilies. When someone comes in to order lilies, I know it’s for something important. A wedding, a 25th anniversary, a baptism... They’re the flowers you choose when you want to be sure you won’t go wrong. Plus, they smell divine—I’ve seen people approach them and simply smile.

Orchids - exotic mystery

Orchids are the divas of the flower world. Fussy, spectacular, and somehow intimidating. Darwin was obsessed with them—he wrote an entire book about how they reproduce. And I understand why. Every orchid seems to be hiding a secret story.

Carnations - underrated heroes

To be honest, carnations are underrated. Everyone sees them as “supermarket flowers,” but they’re much more complex. In Spain, flamenco dancers wear them in their hair. In Korea, they symbolize a mother’s love. And they last forever—perfect for students on a limited budget!

Gerbera - happiness in flower form

Gerberas are natural antidepressants. Seriously. I’ve seen sad people whose expressions instantly change when they see an orange or pink gerbera. They’re like giant smiles from nature.

Hydrangeas - elegant pom-poms

Elegant Pastel Pink Bouquet with Hydrangeas and Roses

Hydrangeas remind me of my grandparents’ houses. Full, fluffy, and with a presence that fills the room. Plus, they change color depending on the soil’s pH—how cool is that?

Daisies - the simplicity that wins us over

Field Romance Bouquet with Peonies, Roses, and Daisies

“They love me, they love me not...” Who hasn’t plucked the petals from a daisy? They’re the flowers of childhood and innocence. And paradoxically, in this complicated world, their very simplicity is what makes them special.

Sunflower - Van Gogh had a point

Sunflower Bouquet - Van Gogh had a point

The sunflower is optimism in plant form. Van Gogh was in love with them, and I understand why. They always turn toward the light, literally. It’s a life lesson in a flower.

How to choose the right flowers?

After spending months observing customers and reading about the symbolism of flowers, I’ve learned that there are no wrong choices. Just choices that are more or less inspired.

For love? Red roses—classic, but they work. For a friend going through a difficult time? Gerberas or sunflowers. For Mom? Pink carnations or white lilies. For “I liked them and wanted to treat myself”? Anything that makes you smile!
